Cognitive-visual imagery, What is Painting, John Baldessari,1968
Louis Yeh, 2025
This piece was inspired by John Baldessari’s What is Painting, 1968, and employs a cognitive visual imagery medium: the canvas unfolds as a mental “sound–image” track, where hand-lettered fragments from the artist’s inner monologue act like an acousmatic soundtrack. In Chion’s terms, the text adds value to the painted forms—conferring semantic and affective depth that exceeds the sum of image and inscription alone. The viewer thus experiences not just a static scene, but the echo of thought made visible.
